A personal agent that stays on (Hermes, OpenClaw)

One always-on 2 vCPU / 4 GiB / 20 GiB machine that keeps its files. It waits for messages most of the time: about 6% CPU on average, with peaks near 100% when it browses or runs a command. Here it runs for the hours a day shown, 30 days a month, and is switched off otherwise with its files kept.

  • OVHcloud VPS · server

    Catches

    • Users say: orders cancelled after payment, with generic reasons (reviews).
    • Bills while switched off: a stopped machine is charged like a running one; only deleting it ends the bill.
    • Whole months only: sold as monthly plans, with no hourly price.
    • CPU sharing unpublished: OVHcloud publishes no CPU-sharing, burst or contention policy for its VPS vCores, so whether a core is shared is not stated.
    • You run the server: OVHcloud makes the server's configuration, security and running your responsibility. A daily backup is included free.
    • Not for: many short runs: a monthly plan bills whether the machine runs 166 hours or none, so 1,000 ten-minute tasks cost the same as an idle month.
  • Runtime · sandbox

    Catches

    • Users say: too few public reviews to judge (reviews).
    • What you keep up: when Runtime updates its default image, a paused sandbox or snapshot keeps its old files; only new sandboxes get the update. You run apt yourself.
    • Not for: a buyer who needs a named founder, a funding history or a company older than a few months.
  • Agent 37 · sandbox

    Catches

    • Users say: too few public reviews to judge (reviews).
    • Data out price unpublished: not published: the billing docs meter only compute and disk.
    • What you keep up: its hosting plans promise automatic updates and security patches, but its API docs say an instance keeps the image it was created from until you run an update, and an update resets anything installed outside your files.
    • Not for: docker on the default type, which is a gVisor container; the vm type costs 2.5× the compute rate.

A coding agent for one developer

One 4 vCPU / 8 GiB / 40 GiB machine for Claude Code or Codex, eight hours a day on 20 working days, stopped otherwise with the repository kept. The CPU works about 4% of the time on average. Here it runs for the hours a day shown, 30 days a month, and is switched off otherwise with its files kept.

    • Bills while switched off: a stopped machine is charged like a running one; only deleting it ends the bill.
    • Whole months only: sold as monthly plans, with no hourly price.
    • Shared CPU: shared vCPU cores on mixed CPU generations, so speed depends on what else runs on the host.
    • You run the server: Contabo is unmanaged: once you have root access, configuration and security are yours. A network firewall is included; daily backups are a paid add-on.
    • Not for: many short runs or one machine per task: there is no hourly or per-second meter, so a ten-minute task costs a month.

  • Scaleway Instances · server

    Catches

    • Users say: accounts restricted or deleted during verification (reviews).
    • Flexible IPv4 extra: $4.06 a month per machine on top of the machine price.
    • Shared CPU: every plan priced here runs its vCPUs on physical cores shared with other Instances; dedicated-CPU ranges cost more and are not priced here.
    • You run the server: Scaleway's shared-responsibility page makes the operating system, patches, firewalls and backups yours; it patches only its own infrastructure.
    • Not for: many short runs: every task under an hour pays a full hour of compute, disk and IPv4, so 1,000 ten-minute tasks cost $29.49 instead of about $5.

Reading this

Price is only half of it. A server never sleeps, keeps a fixed address and has no session limit, which is what a chat bot or an always-on assistant needs. In exchange, most server providers here say in their own terms that keeping the operating system patched and the server secure is your job; Hostinger only advises keeping it updated, and HostUp does not say who updates it. Backups are included on some and a paid extra on others. Each catch above quotes its provider. A sandbox can pause, fork and throw machines away, which is what short tasks need. Sandbox providers run the host and the isolation, but a sandbox you keep for weeks is not automatically patched: on several, a kept sandbox stays on the image it started from, and many publish nothing on it. Each catch says what that provider documents. The cheapest servers here share CPU cores with other customers, and their public reviews vary a lot; each provider page has a dated What users say section. The situations and use cases weigh those differences.

Prices are list prices before tax, on month-to-month terms where a provider offers them; longer prepaid terms are cheaper on some servers. The model's cost is the same wherever the agent runs, so it is left out. To change any number, use the calculator; how the numbers are made explains each provider's billing.
